That's because The Beatles recorded a half-assed attempt at the song because they HATED it, with good reason. Comparing Gerry to the Beatles is a joke-he's a "b" or "c" act at best compared to The Beatles

This song was forced on them by George Martin because they didn't have "Please, Please, Me" yet. And John and Paul told George Martin after they recorded it they COULDN'T go back to Liverpool and play this lame tune. So you're a dork for not knowing what was behind it all. Actually they had already pitched "Please, Please Me" to George Martin prior to recording this song but in a slower version which didn't work apparently and it was nixed. After this recording they played Martin the retooled version of "Please Please Me" we're all familiar with. The rest is history...

What's your problem dougalmac? Yes G&TPM are not The Beatles. We all know that. But dont mock this song or Mitch Murray. This song is great, its just (as you correctly said) The Beatles didnt want it and so didnt sing it well.

Gerry made this a Number 1 and followed with another Mitch Murry song "I like It" also Numer 1 in England. Be it the Beatles or the Pacemakers you gotta give some credit to Mich Murry, he wrote a lot of off the wall songs that put groups at the top of the charts, Freddy and the Dreamers "I'm telling you Now" George Fame "Bonnie and Clyde" along with severl later songs "Billy don"t be a Hero" "The Night Chicago Died"

Semprini20 : Yes but it was a choice between "PS I Love You" and "Love Me Do" - not "Please Please Me" for their debut single. 15 takes of "Love Me Do" were performed on September 4 1962 followed by 18 takes on September 11 (with session man Andy White on drums) before Martin was satisfied and decided to go with "Love Me Do".Initial takes of "Please Please Me" were recorded but, as you say, these were slow and it took further up tempo
