the 6th Louisiana volunteers ,nearly all Irish born , & one of the finest fighting units in General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia was in virtually every battle in the East. Its hard service included Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, The Seven Days, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. After recuperating, the 6th went on to the horrendous battles of 1864, the siege of Petersburg, and the surrender at Appomattox Court House Virginia

Interesting comment. I always assumed that those who fought for the South were mainly protestant and British and French origin etc, with the Irish-Americans fighting for the Union? Personally I would have been behind the North everytime, but in saying that I dont know a great deal about the American Civil War.Best wishes.

No, you're more or less correct. There were many different cultures mixed into the Civil War that are hard to classify as any form of cliche or certain lifestyle. And I agree, I too would pick the north.

I read about an Irish Brigade of the U.S. Army during the mexican war that carried the gren banner they defected to the mexican side and were known as los san patricios (st. patrick's brigade) just throwing that out there
