Just one word - Realbooks, which were pioneered by Steve Swallow (and in many cases inaccurate, since he includes transcriptions his students made). The Realbooks discourage young jazz musicians from actually listening to jazz by building their reliance up on the written material. In other words, Realbooks are basically a crutch, and they have dumbed down countless numbers of young aspiring jazz musicians. They're also filled with a sizable portion of Steve Swallow's shitty songs.

That old saw does not appear to be true - search for "real book" at Wikipedia. The so-called "urban myth" that Swallow and/or Paul Bley created the Real Book is dealt with. As to whether or not Swallow's songs are shitty, well, that's your opinion; let's hear some of your originals.

OK... so jokes and humour have no place in jazz music anymore?? These two people are among the finest jazz musicians in the world, and this time they are making a big joke over the classic misinterpretation that bass players cannot sing, cannot solo, cannot anything but barely hold down a bass line. It's funny stuff, and I think it's great to see that some people don't take themselves more seriously than that they can actually see the funny side in stuff. Great stuff. :)
