Dylan wrote With God On Our Side in 1963 to show that once you believe God is on your side you can perform any kind of atrocity and think it is the right thing to do. When Dylan talks about the killing the Indians do you really think he meant it was the right thing to do? When Dylan talks about the Germans became our friends after World War so God must be on their side to do you really think he meant killing six millions Jews was the right thing to do?

I thought the sarcasm was apparent from the get go and, as a high school history teacher, I would use this for that reason. Maybe my history background allows me to listen it with a different set of eyes.

OK, I'm honestly confused. I AGREE with you that this is a satire. What I don't understand is why you don't think the images used are as much for satirical purpose as the words?It works for education, too, by pointing up the ironies (Excellent discussion fodder). I don't see any reason to think that the maker of the song was unaware of the sarcasm. You may be the one who's missing something?

The reason that verse was removed only proves my point further. That verse basically asks if God was on Judas side to kill his own son. Seems to me like the person who was making the song was too thick to understand that this song was a satire until he/she got to that verse. When that person got to that verse obviously it didnt make sense to them so they just removed it. What you people need to understand is that the WHOLE song was framed around that same SATIRICAL LOGIC. EVERY SINGLE VERSE!
