Great comment texwasabi!! Steve Perry had his good times with Journey and I did like most of the time when he was with them, especially when he and Rollie sang together. When the Egos started getting out of hand is when it got SSDD for me. You could still hear the Santana influence on this album. Great stuff. So happy that it has been posted. Thanks.

Actually, why do you hate to say it? Journey went from being a free-style Jazz/rock fusion quartet comprised of rock legends who had already paid their dues (Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie in Santana, Anysley Dunbar, a legend in his own right, and Ross Valory, one of the least-known progressive underground players of the time) to morphing into a "girlie band", for lack of a better adjective, in my opinion.

buellosaurusex:Yes,it is a pity. Journey is one of the groups that many don't know how they started,the influence Carlos Santana had on them. Many bands were very young when they started and they evolved into exceptional groups over the years. Steve Winwood is a prime example. Still one of the best Musicians ever to grace us with his talents. We are the same age, so we probably listened to similar music over the years. I am glad to see younger folks liking the same music I liked at their age.

Neal Schon was, at the time, one of the leading technoguitar wizards ever! Nobody in that era wailed on the fingerboard with that kind of blistering speed....this was pre Van Halen, remember! The closest I could compare him to was Alan Holdsworth, or perhaps Daryl Stuermer.......I first heard this entire album played on an "underground" fm station and was absolutely blown away. It's a pity so few know what Journey started off as........

buellosaurusrex: You are quite correct Sir!!! I do believe I have a couple of ticket stubs from this time period when they came through here. I hate to say I prefer this sound over the Perry sound, but it is different and I guess I just like both. :) It is a shame that nothing like this is even considered by any groups getting together today. Great tunes and much talent to get this sound. Glad we have You Tube to relive it all. :) Peace.
