It's not "just" a rhythmic exercise because it exhibits minimalistic development. What happens is that there are two voices, and they start off repeating the first bar, in unison, some number of times (9? I forget.) Then the second voice switches to doing that bar, but offset by one 1/8-note, while the first part continues with the original unit. That bar is repeated the same number of times, then the second part becomes offset again by one 1/8-note, etc. ~not enough characters, contin

I find that watching it takes away from it slightly because the hand movement is not synced up with the sound in this song. Still, very interesting...

So what happens is that patterns gradually move as the second part becomes shifted farther and farther relative to the first part. Eventually the second part comes full circle (when it's shifted by 12 1/8-notes) and they end in unison.Whether you think the minimalistic, surfacing-pattern aspect makes it all worthwhile is up to you. Some like it, some don't. But it's not a typical "drumline or non-melodic percussion piece."

That particular technique is called phasing. I think you misinterpreted my meaning there. I love Steve Reich. Tehillim and Different Trains are two of my all-time favorite compositions. I wrote that comment in response to a dispariging comment about the piece that called it worthless, pretentious, etc, because it used clapping instead of insturments. I was defending it.
